Water Mill (Thwaite Mills)

As part of the water topic we are studying in Year 6, we went to visit a working water mill in Leeds. We were fascinated by the way water is used and how the mill works without electricity. During our visit, we had the opportunity to learn about how water wheels work and the different kinds of water wheels. This half term, we have also had a visitor who came to talk to us about how important water is. This lead us to research ways to save water.

Saving Water

Based on our research, we have produced leaflets and written letters about why it’s important to save water and how we can do it. Did you know, 1 in 9 people in the world do not have access to clean water? That’s almost 900 million people! Also, in Britain, the average person uses 132 litres of water, a day.

Treasure Island

As part of our Treasure Island work, Year 6 were lucky enough to work with 2 professional actors. We really enjoyed dressing up as the characters and freeze framing parts of the story. It really helped us when we started our writing from Jim’s perspective in the barrel.

As part of our Geography and Science learning, we researched Biomes and found out about the different climates, plants and animals of each. Each group were then given a Biomes to create using a shoe box and different materials. We had lots of fun and created lots of mess!

This half term, we went to BRI to learn more about how to keep ourselves safe by attending the Injury Minimisation Program for Schools. We learnt a lot about how to keep ourselves safe and what to do when we find someone who has been injured.

Newlands Mill Disaster

We also studied some local history, this half term, by exploring the Newlands Mill Disaster which occurred in West Bowling, in 1882. The topic touched our hearts and the details of the sorry incident will always be remembered.

Children produced a poster, using Pic Collage, to summarise the events.

This half term Year 6 visited the National Science and Media Museum to visit exciting light workshop and the newly refurbished ‘Wonderlab’.

Video Stimuluses

Our writing this half term has been based around video stimuluses. We watched a short adventure clip about a young boy name Theo and his sister Lana. Here is a link to the video – http://www.teachertube.com/video/replay-amazing-animated-short-film-by-talantis-films-distribution-292729

Some fantastic, exciting writing was produced as you can see below.
